As Ranger has gotten older it has been more and more fun to read books with him! He now loves to turn the pages and usually has a favorite page in each of his favorite books. At this point in his life he likes the books with one main picture on each page and the more colorful the better!
Here are his favorites these days:
- He loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar
by Eric Carle. We’ve been reading this book to him since he was a few months old. It has a few more words than some of his other favorite books so depending on the day we’ll shorten it as necessary.
- We recently picked up Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
by Bill Martin, Jr. from our library. The board book with more illustrations from Eric Carle keeps his attention. We shorten it the words to something like, ” The brown bear sees the red bird”, turn page “The red bird sees the yellow duck”, etc. He’ll read this book a few times in a row sometimes. His favorite page has all the children :)
- Another library find was If You’re Happy and You Know It!
by Jane Cabrera. It is particularly colorful and the animals are very fun. It has the lyrics to the song with one action and an animal on each page We shorten it to something similar like “the monkey says clap you hands” and don’t bother with the whole song yet.
- He likes Where’s The Big Red Doggie? , a Clifford book by Norman Bridwell. For a few weeks he was interested enough to find Clifford on every page. It is another bright book with just a few main items on each page.
- Another book he reads through over and over again is Baby Colors. There is one picture and one color on each page as well as a lift-the-flap surprise. He loves to turn the pages and sometimes we read this book three times in a row.
The last book Ranger has really enjoyed recently has been this soft cloth Mother Goose book sewn by one of the ladies at my church as a baby shower gift.
I think he likes that he can turn the pages on his own. This morning he looked at it by himself for 15 minutes or so. He just stares at the pictures and folds the pages. I am glad he has at least one book he can read on his own :)
