More practical for now {The Kind Side}

Notes from the Kind Side Project
Notes from the Kind Side – Where I Pause to Make Space for Kind Self-Talk

Earlier this year I set a goal to get up before the kids. Quiet space in the dark is what I needed and it worked for a while. But then it stopped working and lately I’ve realized that starting my day of having slept through my first goal is undermining my day a bit.

So, even though I would prefer to get up in quiet and be well rested still, I have to adjust to what actually works instead of trying to force things that don’t right now.

So that’s where I’m at. I’m reminding myself it’s ok to change or even completely let go of goals if they’re not working. If it’s not practical, I can think about the problem and see how I might meet the need behind the goal in a different way.

I should probably do that more often than I do.

So here’s what I’m doing for my mornings.

Need behind the getting up early goal: start the day in peace and get a few extra things done (especially writing).

First need behind the goal: peace and rest. I’ll get up when I wake up. The kids have started acting bigger and letting me sleep while they watch their morning shows. Which is strange and magical (maybe four and half years is the magic key? haha), but I could get used to it if I used to it. And what more peaceful way to start the day than with a little extra sleep?

Second need: get a few extra things done and write. My first impulse to get things done is to put it into a schedule, but that can undermine productivity, too. So this time I’m trying something with less structure, but more specificity. I’ll start it with a window of opportunity and four things to do. I want to spend 20 minutes each on reading, writing, running, and homeschooling ideally by 10 or practically by noon. I can certainly find an hour and twenty minutes to spend well in our most productive daily hours.

We’ll see how it works!

Do you have a goal you’ve been consistently missing? What are you trying to do with that goal? What need are you trying to meet? Do you need to restructure, repurpose, unstructure, or let it go?

PS – If you want a week-long trial of Hopewriters, it’s only a dollar for today. Check it out! Also: I’d be glad to help you make the most of your week by recommending specific resources if you have a goal in mind. Just leave comment here or message me on social media :)

  1. Very thought-provoking. My missed goal has been lights-out/bedtime, and simply reaffirming my commitment to the goal clearly isn’t working! Your questions are going to help me. :)

Your space.
